More about this course
Shelter increases your chances in almost any survival situation. Some survivalists even give shelter priority over fire. Circumstances dictate, make choices. And you are going to learn why, how to choose, and how not to have to choose. Preparation and the knowledge of a few good knots and hitches will come in handy, and not only with shelter building... Also consider a river crossing, chores around camp, or a rescue situation.
Hence, a course day covering knots, stitches and shelters is a must for every (day) hiker and camper. A day hiker will now think, “huh, how is this for me too?” But the numbers are merciless: it is the day hikers who get lost the most often and are rescued the most by emergency services, sometimes only after several days. Be welcome at Outdoor Heroes!
The group starts the day learning knots, hitches and lashings. You've probably heard of a figure eight knot, the clove hitch, a fisherman's knot, slip knot or bowline. Soon you will be able to lay them blindfolded! You'll learn how to tie and apply a variety of those knots and hitches, for example for rope tensioning, line joining and connection materials (lashing).
You will also learn how to build an emergency shelter from natural materials and how to quickly and safely set up shelter so that you are protected from the elements and can spend the night in nature if necessary. The use of a tarp is covered in depth. We will discuss and pitch various setup methods. And after this course the chances of you ever heading out without a tarp in your backpack will be slim to none.
The course provides knowledge and experience that you can put into practice immediately and daily. Whether you are an experienced outdoor enthusiast or a beginner, it is a unique opportunity to learn new skills and increase your potential for new adventure. Not to mention that these are essential survival techniques!
Ropes, carabiners and tarp will be provided. If you would like to test your own equipment, then obviously that would be the most fun!
Thermos with coffee will be available in the morning. Lunch is not included, so bring some!
Other details will follow by e-mail after registration.
