More about this Land Navigation course

Devices with batteries have limitations. They run out. Or cell-coverage is suddenly lost!

Being well prepared (perhaps the most important survival skill) thus means carrying a map and compass. Whether that is your primary navigational tool or serves as a backup. But that also means you have to know how to use a map and compass. How do you find your way to your next location or back to where you came from? An indispensable skill for every (day) hiker, walker, trekker, woodsman or woman, adventurer and explorer. After all, getting lost is the most common cause of ending up in a survival situation!

This course provides the complete groundwork for confident orienteering, nowadays commonly referred to as: land navigation. Historically, however, the term navigation was strictly limited to shipping and aviation. "Learned something new again", you'll probably think. Which means we've already started! And the learning will continue before the course day begins: you will get access to an extensive instructional video (also for later reference) so that course day will be minimal theory and maximum practice. Because after all, that's how you learn the most!

We cover maps, scales, terrain features and contour lines. You will learn how to use a compass and how to use these two instruments together. You will learn how to determine your location, find the right direction and how to move safely and efficiently in unfamiliar terrain. The course is suitable for both novice and experienced hikers and provides a good foundation for further exploration and adventure if you have done little with map and compass before. We end the day with a Navigation Challenge, which involves using acquired knowledge, creativity, decision-making and a bit of perseverance.

Maps, compasses and other course materials will be provided by Outdoor Heroes. If you have your own compass, feel free to bring it along and learn how to use it even better!

Coffee included! Lunch is not, so take some with you or visit the nearby bakery or restaurant.

Practical info will follow by e-mail after registration.
